New Dawn (1st Stage Stabilization)

Please visit our FAQ page to learn more!
New Dawn has a well-respected reputation for remaining accessible to women who experience multiple barriers to accessing treatment, often due to concurrent disorders. As well, New Dawn accepts women who are prescribed medications that remain controversial and can complicate women’s access to services. The capacity for long-term care and supports is unique and critical: effectively addressing the concurrent issues underpinning women’s addiction requires more than 30 – 90 days. Women can access service and care based on their actual needs, and remain in each of our homes for up to 18 months or longer, rather than a predetermined program length. We provide structured programs in safe, comfortable, and home-like environments. We emphasize individual empowerment and self-responsibility. Within the program at New Dawn, our residents are introduced to The Women’s Way Through the 12 Steps, as well as a variety of self-help programs.

Our programs are not medicalized treatment programs, but they are therapeutically designed recovery programs. What’s the difference between treatment & support recovery?

“TREATMENT”

  •  takes place in an institution (i.e.: hospital), or institutional-like environments
  •  larger number of participants (20+), often co-ed
  • program is fixed in length (i.e.: 30, 60 or 90 days)
  • rigorous schedules & concentrated curriculums
  • more emphasis on psychoeducation, medicalized treatments & cognitive therapies
  • less emphasis on communal living, strengthening skills for interpersonal relationships, and basic life skills (ie: few if any daily chores, meals are prepared by staff)
  • all supports are provided onsite (medical, psychiatry, counselling, meetings, groups)
  • aftercare planning can be limited
  • “you go in, it’s fast & furious, you leave” vs.

Support Recovery at Chrysalis

  • environments are non-institutional: comfortable, cozy & home-like. The houses are homes.
  • smaller number of participants ( 10 max), women-only
  • women can stay for up to 18 months, or longer
  • very structured, but gentler schedules & routines
  • more emphasis on holistic health, stabilization (body, mind & spirit), & long-term relapse prevention
  • more emphasis on communal living, strengthening skills for interpersonal relationships, & basic lifeskills (ie: daily chores, meal preparation, & self-care)
  • supports provided both onsite and offsite (ie: daily groups & staffing onsite; counseling, therapeutic recreation & concurrent supports offsite)
  • comprehensive aftercare planning is the standard goal
  • “you have time to apply learned skills & knowledge w/ immediate, ongoing supports”

Recovery Stages are NOT determined by length of abstinence alone: we encourage women to think more about their needs rather than simply counting the number of days of abstinence they’ve achieved. New Dawn provides women with the time, safety, and 24-hour support they need to build healthy relationships and develop essential life skills as a foundation for recovery. We support each woman’s transition to second-stage when she feels ready, showing this readiness through her actions and initiative. Time is not a concern—we are dedicated to supporting women in achieving long-term success.
